If you’re a parent standing at that crossroads — struggling to choose between homeschooling, online school, or traditional public school — you’re not alone. We were once in that exact place, trying to balance fear, hope, values, and the desire to give our children an education that felt both safe and meaningful.
In the end, we chose a hybrid: homeschooling through K-12 online school. It gives us structure, flexibility, safety, and connection — all in one.
Why We Stepped Away From Traditional Schooling
1. School Shootings & Rising Violence
This is the topic no parent wants to face, but it’s impossible to ignore. The rising number of school shootings left me with a fear I couldn’t shake. Sending my kids to school started to feel like a gamble, not a routine.
Their safety became non-negotiable.
2. Unsafe or Unpredictable Situations With Teachers & Students
Classrooms should be safe havens. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. We’ve experienced — and witnessed — bullying, inappropriate treatment, and environments that left our kids anxious instead of supported.
3. Bus Safety Concerns
What used to be reliable transportation now comes with too many risks. With stories of reckless drivers, unsafe buses, and avoidable accidents, I couldn’t ignore the knot in my stomach every morning.
4. Influences We Didn’t Want Shaping Our Kids
I’m not trying to shield my kids from life — I’m trying to introduce it at the right time. Schools today expose children to adult topics, language, pressure, and behaviors far earlier than many of us feel comfortable with.
I wanted to protect their innocence, not rush it.
Why Hybrid Schooling Works for Our Family
✔ A Structured Curriculum Without Reinventing the Wheel
K-12 provides a full academic curriculum, licensed teachers, and guidance.
I don’t have to build every subject from scratch.
✔ Flexibility to Teach in Our Own Way
We can weave in homesteading, nature, hands-on projects, and real-life skills. The learning feels meaningful, not forced.
✔ Safety Above Everything Else
My kids now learn in a place where they feel protected, not afraid. That change alone has transformed them.
✔ Personalized Learning Pace
We adjust lessons based on each child.
No one gets rushed. No one gets left behind.
✔ Stronger Emotional Connection & Family Stability
Our home feels calmer. Our communication is stronger. My children feel heard, supported, and secure.
Acknowledging the Blessing — and the Reality
I need to say this clearly:
I know I am blessed to be able to stay home and participate in my children’s education.
Not every parent has this option. For years, I didn’t. Our life didn’t open this door until about six months ago. Before that, I was juggling work, responsibilities, and survival.
So if you’re reading this and thinking, “I wish I could, but I can’t right now,” please know:
I see you. I understand. And I respect your situation.
Homeschooling or hybrid schooling isn’t accessible for everyone, and that doesn’t make anyone a lesser parent.
But if your circumstances ever shift — even a little — and you find yourself in a place where this might be possible, I want you to know:
The rewards are endless.
More connection.
More peace.
More influence.
More presence in your children’s lives.
Being Honest About the Hard Days
Let me be completely real:
This path is NOT perfect.
We have had days where:
- everyone was crying
- everyone was frustrated
- everyone was overwhelmed
- and nothing was going according to plan
There were moments when I questioned my patience, my abilities, and my sanity.
But even on the hardest days, one truth remains:
The benefits have NEVER been outweighed by the struggles.
Not once.
The growth, safety, confidence, and peace my kids experience every day make every challenge worth it.
For Families Still Debating Their Options
When deciding between traditional school, online school, and homeschooling, consider:
- Where does my child feel safest?
- What kind of environment nurtures them emotionally?
- What pace do they genuinely need?
- What influences do I want around them daily?
- What season is our family currently in?
Every family is different.
Every child is different.
There is no universal “right” choice.
For us, hybrid schooling allowed us to give our children safety, structure, freedom, and stability all at once. It reshaped our home, our relationships, and our daily rhythm for the better.
If your heart has been nudging you toward this path, maybe this is your sign to explore it.
