Why We Chose This Life: A Homestead Built on Legacy, Laughter & Protecting Our Children

Six months ago, when we started this journey, everyone said:

“Why make life harder?”

“Why not just buy everything at the store?”

“Why choose work when convenience exists?”

But this life was never about convenience.

It was about our kids—

their safety, their future, their freedom.

It was about refusing to hand our hard-earned money to massive, nameless corporations that don’t know us, don’t care about us, and never will.

It was about coming home—really HOME

We didn’t start a homestead.

We returned to a legacy.

Three Kids, One Dream

Our days start with an older daughter who’s growing into her own strength—

curious, observant, wiser than her years.

And two younger sons who chase chickens, laughter, sunshine, and each other—

faces covered in dirt, joy, and whatever snack they found in the barn.

No screens needed.

No mall trips required.

No pressure to become anything but who they are.

They’re growing up in fresh air, scraped knees, and wonder.

They know where food comes from—because they helped raise it.

That’s the childhood we wanted for them.

A Hardworking Man, A Determined Woman & A Farm Full of Hope

It’s not just my journey—

it’s ours.

Me and my hard-working man side by side—

building fences, fixing what breaks, figuring out what we don’t know yet,

learning a rhythm older than we are.

Some days we’re thriving.

Some days we’re winging it.

Most days, it’s both.

But somehow, there’s always laughter—

echoing across the fields, floating through the barn,

reminding us we chose this life on purpose.

A Generational Echo

My dad has lived this life forever—

quiet hands, steady knowledge, patience carved by seasons.

He learned it from his parents—

and now our kids are learning from him.

Four generations connected by soil, sweat, seeds, and stories.

We’re not just farming.

We’re continuing a promise.

Six Months In… and Everything Has Changed

We’ve only been doing this half a year, but it has already reshaped us:

We grocery shop less and grow more.

We complain less and appreciate more.

We buy less and create more.

We slow down.

We notice things.

We feel things.

Like the pride in a fresh egg.

The holiness in a garden sprout.

The peace in a quiet sunset after a long day.

No corporation can sell that kind of satisfaction.

The World Thinks We’re Crazy—But We Know Better

We’re raising kids who understand hard work—not entitlement.

Kids who see food as life—not product.

Kids who know that safety isn’t bought—it’s built.

And we’re teaching them the lesson we learned late:

Freedom isn’t found in money, success, convenience, or comfort.

It’s found in dirt under your nails,

a stocked pantry you raised yourself,

and knowing your family will eat—no matter what the world does.

This Life Isn’t Always Easy—But It’s Always Worth It

There are days we’re exhausted.

Days we question everything.

Days we wonder if we’re even doing it right.

But then a kid giggles while gathering eggs.

Or our hands brush while feeding animals.

Or my dad smiles—quiet, proud, knowing.

And suddenly, we remember:

This life is not a burden—

It’s a blessing.

We Didn’t Choose Homesteading to Escape the World—We Chose It to Build a Better One

One where children feel safe.

One where family comes first.

One where money stays in homes—not boardrooms.

One where legacy matters more than convenience.

Someday our kids will look back and say:

“We were raised with purpose.”

That’s the dream.

That’s the mission.

That’s the why—always the why.

If you felt this—share it.

There’s another tired-but-determined homestead mama out there

wondering if she’s doing enough.

Let her know—

she already is.
