Chicken & Dumpling Soup From Scratch — A Bowl of Fall Comfort (Shhh… Don’t Tell Our Birds)

There’s something magical about fall. The breeze gets cooler, the leaves start whispering their way off the trees, and suddenly the soul starts craving something warm, nurturing, and slow. And in my house, that always means one thing: chicken and dumpling soup from scratch.

Now, don’t tell our birds I said this… but sometimes nothing fills your chest with comfort the way this soup does. It’s the kind of recipe that feels like a hug from the inside out — the kind that makes the whole house smell like love, patience, and the warmth of home.

Why Chicken & Dumpling Soup Just Hits Different in the Fall

Fall has a way of slowing us down. It reminds us to savor the moment, soak in the season, and nourish ourselves in ways that winter’s harshness won’t always allow.

Chicken and dumpling soup is more than a meal — it’s therapy. It’s grounding. It’s stirring something in your chest that says:

“You’re home. Sit down. Breathe. Eat.”

And maybe it’s the mothering instinct in all of us, or maybe it’s just the nostalgia, but when that pot starts simmering… everything feels a little more manageable.

Let’s Talk About From-

Scratch

Making this soup from scratch isn’t hard. It’s simply intentional.

You’re choosing depth of flavor over convenience.

You’re choosing slowness over speed.

You’re choosing heart over hurry.

Every step — chopping vegetables, boiling the chicken, rolling the dumplings — becomes its own tiny ritual. Like a meditation you can eat afterward.

And yes, it takes a little longer.

But in the fall, time feels softer anyway.

How I Make My From-Scratch Chicken & Dumpling Soup

Here’s a simple version of how I make mine:

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken or several bone-in pieces
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 3 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3–4 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt, pepper, thyme, bay leaf
  • Water or homemade broth
  • Butter & flour (for thickening, optional)

Dumplings

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted

Directions

  1. Boil chicken until tender. Remove, cool, and shred.
  2. Add veggies to the broth and simmer until soft.
  3. Stir in shredded chicken and season generously.
  4. Mix dumpling dough, drop spoonfuls into simmering soup, cover, and cook 15 minutes.
  5. Serve hot and breathe in that comfort.

The Way It Makes Your Home Feel

There’s something about soup that feels alive — like every bubble on the surface is releasing stress into the air. Kids wandering in asking, “What smells so good?” helps too.

And the best part?

This is the kind of meal that invites everyone to slow down, gather around the table, and actually be present.

No rush.

No chaos.

Just soup and warmth.

Don’t Tell the Chickens… But This Soup Is a Love

If you keep chickens, you know the guilt.

You know the stare.

You know the judgment.

But listen… these moments are part of the circle of homestead life.

And the comfort, nourishment, and joy this soup brings is worth whispering lovingly through the coop fence:

“I’m sorry, girls. It’s for the greater good.”

A Bowl Full of Soul for Fall

When the nights start getting darker a little earlier and the days get busier, this soup is your reminder to take a moment and care for yourself, too.

Chicken and dumpling soup is more than a recipe.

It’s a pause button.

A grounding moment.

A way to feed your family’s bodies and your own spirit.

So go ahead — make the pot. Fill your home with the smell of fall. Savor every bite.

And maybe give the chickens an extra scoop of scratch.

Just to ease your conscience.
